چکیده

We study observation-based strategies for partiallyobservable Markov decision processes (POMDPs) with omega-regular objectives. An observation-based strategy relies on partial information about the history of a play, namely, on the past sequence of observations. We consider the qualitative analysis problem: given a POMDP with an omega-regular objective, whether there is an observation-based strategy to achieve the objective with probability 1 (almost-sure winning), or with positive probability (positive winning). Our main results are twofold. First, we present a complete picture of the computational complexity of the qualitative analysis of POMDPs with parity objectives (a canonical form to express omega-regular objectives) and its subclasses. Our contribution consists in establishing several upper and lower bounds that were not known in literature. Second, we present optimal bounds (matching upper and lower bounds) on the memory required by pure and randomized observation-based strategies for the qualitative analysis of POMDPs with parity objectives and its subclasses.

What is Decidable about Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes with omega-Regular Objectives

We consider partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs) with ω-regular conditions specified as parity objectives. The class of ω-regular languages extends regular languages to infinite strings and provides a robust specification language to express all properties used in verification, and parity objectives are canonical forms to express ω-regular conditions. The qualitative analysis...

A Possibilistic Model for Qualitative Sequential Decision Problems under Uncertainty in Partially Observable Environments

In this article we propose a qualitative ( ordi nal) counterpart for the Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes rnodel (POMDP) in which the uncertainty, as well as the prefer ences of the agent, are modeled by possibility distributions. This qualitative counterpart of the POMDP model relies on a possibilistic theory of decision under uncertainty, recently developed. One advantage of s...

A POMDP Framework to Find Optimal Inspection and Maintenance Policies via Availability and Profit Maximization for Manufacturing Systems

Maintenance can be the factor of either increasing or decreasing system's availability, so it is valuable work to evaluate a maintenance policy from cost and availability point of view, simultaneously and according to decision maker's priorities. This study proposes a Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) framework for a partially observable and stochastically deteriorating syste...

Qualitative MDPs and POMDPs: An Order-Of-Magnitude Approximation

We develop a qualitative theory of Markov Decision Processes (mdps) and Partially Observable mdps that can be used to model sequential decision making tasks when only qualitative information is available. Our approach is based upon an order-of-magnitude approximation of both probabilities and utilities, similar to 2-semantics. The result is a qualitative theory that has close ties with the stan...
